Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

Ringed necked Pheasants - Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

Black-crowned Night Heron- There is no secret I love the Heron's. Well we were thrilled when we drove upon this thicket of Black-crowned Night Heron's. There was no less than 50-60 of these lovely birds who dotted the thicket for several yards. Not the best photo however I wanted to share my delight. Prior to this large sighting we had only observed this bird in such large nubers in Santa Rosa at a median rookery.

Ibis (Glossy and White-Faced Ibis) This was our first sighting of this bird. Jill spotted them on a small island in the middle of a flooded field. Our view was obstructed by long grass near the road. This bird was also in a large flock of 10-15.

Today we visited the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge for the first time, our goal was to see the Falcated Duck. This is the second winter over for this non native  non local duck. We had reports that the Falcated Duck could be seen from the viewing platform however today there was no sighting. We enjoyed the trail and auto tour. We plan on visiting this location again and again. We had several first time sightings of the Glossy / White Face Ibis.We also saw dozens of Black Crowned Night Herons. In abundance was multiple varieties of Hawks, Swans, Geese and wintering Ducks.
